How this works

Medicare Savings Programs are run by each state's Medicaid agency and pay Medicare costs for people with limited income and savings. The Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program pays Part B premiums and Medicare's deductibles and copayments. The Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary and Qualifying Individual programs pay Part B premiums. Extra Help, run by Social Security, lowers what you pay for Part D drug coverage.

This compares your income and savings with the federal lines Medicare publishes for the year. Those lines are a floor, not a ceiling. Many states go above them or do not count some kinds of income or savings, the lines are slightly higher in Alaska and Hawaii, and your home and usually one car do not count. So being above a line is not a reason to skip applying.

Anyone enrolled in a Medicare Savings Program also gets Extra Help without applying for it separately. A State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselor can help with both applications for free.

Only your state Medicaid agency and Social Security decide who is enrolled. This is information about published rules, not a benefits-eligibility determination.
